Fast Food Garbage

Saturday, March 15, 2008

Today I joined a group of Knights of Columbus men on a highway cleanup project. We spent about 3 hours picking up garbage along side 8 kilometers of highway near Oliver BC. We filled *MANY* bags with garbage of which I think more than *90 percent* was from fast food outlet packaging. There was garbage to pick up every few feet! It’s disgusting! Is there a solution to this problem? Of course there is! There are probably many good ideas for reducing this garbage. Why do people have to eat while driving . . . how long does it take to consume a fast food snack *inside* the fast food restaurant where it was purchased?

Maybe an higher cost for items purchased for takeout should be charged . . . maybe 30 to 50 percent higher? Maybe municipalities should invoke a “garbage tax” on fast food that is taken off restaurant premises? Would something like that be enough incentive to take an extra few minutes to consume fast food *in* restaurants? It would in many cases provide a probably *needed* rest for drivers and they would be more *alert* when resuming their journey. It *would* go a long way to keeping a cleaner and more pleasant environment for all of us.

That’s me in front in the photo shown below.

Daylight Saving Time Sucks

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

I am still trying to get used to Daylight Saving Time. How can a few people force this onto an unwilling majority (I think) that hate it!

In the last short while I have bought a car, expanded my environment, and worked on maintaining websites in Oliver and started a new website in Osoyoos (http://stanneosoyoos.org). I have only one week left before my surgery in Penticton . . . does it worry me? Yes, kinda.

Made In China

Monday, March 3, 2008

Since the days are now warm enough for outdoor cooking I decided to buy a new small compact charcoal barbecue. I wanted one that I could abandon when it comes time to travel again (end of April?). Of course it was made in China, what isn’t, and my expectation of quality disappeared as soon as I saw where it was made. I had to assemble it myself, and yes, my expectation was true. One of the cheap plastic parts broke during assembly, and in order to not break any more parts I used my fingers, not a screwdriver, to complete the job. It really is very cheaply made. In all of North America it seems that one can no longer expect quality in anything. I wonder what the parts are made from . . . depleted uranium metal and lead paint? Plastic from used styrofoam packing material? What else? It looks okay, but it is junk . . . even before it is used.

I bought a new (old???), 1998 Pontiac Sunfire car. I can now venture further away from the motorhome than walking distance. The car came with a hitch so I can tow it behind the motorhome when necessary. I still have to buy two new tires for it. My Suburban has been sold in New Brunswick. Thank you Sheila for looking after the sale for me!
