Harper’s Contempt For Artists

Sunday, September 28, 2008

By not even keeping Canada’s cultural granting program budget at the present level, but rather sigificantly slashing cultural budgets and eliminating some of the programs, Harper has again shown his unilateral method of governing and his contempt for artists. His contemptuous actions are best described by an “Open Letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper” by Wajdi Mouawad, a writer; Governor General Award-winning Canadian Playwright; Knight of the Ordre National des Arts et des Lettres, France; and Artistic Director of French Theatre, The National Arts Centre of Canada, Ottawa. You can read this *very* informative letter at http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/ats/838200584.html.

I am a visual artist . . . a painter. I have never applied for nor have I ever been a recipient of funds from any government cultural programs. However, I do understand the great contribution of our Canadian Artists towards helping to establish a Canadian cultural identity, both at home and abroad. Government cultural programs have always been of significant help to our most deserving artists to establish this Canadian identity. I can’t understand his motive for these cuts. Like his false reasons for not attending the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, his actions towards Canadian artists has reasons other than that which he purposed . . . that of being a mere matter of budgeting. It is, I believe, more likely a matter of contempt for artists.

Harper has seriously under estimated the value of artists to Canada’s identity and he has, to his peril, under estimated the power of artists. Power to effectively use their writing, painting, acting, sculpting, singing and other artistic skills. Canadians much prefer their cultural identity to that of multi-national corporations with a short term view to make as much money as possible in the shortest time frame. Stephen Harper should give his head a shake and reconsider the impact of his unilateral decision to cut government cultural programs.

Apology to PCTools

Friday, September 26, 2008

I received a delayed response from PCTools technical support. The troubleshooting tips were very good and very helpful. Also, response to my questions regarding removal of Norton antivirus software was given with integrity and honesty and in no way was it detrimental to Norton. My acceptance of PCTools software has been happily restored, and I apologize for my previous remarks about PCTools. “Spyware Doctor” now works without affecting my Eudora email client.

Although I am now impressed with PCTools technical support, I am not sure what the fix was to my problem. Between the beginning of the problem and its solution I had also installed Microsoft Vista Service Pack 1. That may have been what fixed my problem, because now, both ‘Spyware Doctor’ and/or ‘Norton Antivirus’ work without problems. I’m happy!

PC Tools Let Me Down

Friday, September 19, 2008

Recently I have been *extremely* busy on my computer, trying to catch up on web site work. Also, there have been far too many software updates that all seem to occur at the *same* time. As usual, some of the updates affect other programs requiring them to be fixed as well. I have spent most of my time in the last few days troubleshooting software while falling further behind with the work that the computer is supposed to make easy!

I installed a new program, “Spyware Doctor” . . . my Eudora email client stopped working! I removed spyware doctor and Eudora worked. I reinstalled Spyware Doctor . . . Eudora stopped working again. I again removed Spyware Doctor to get Eudora working and I relayed the problem to PC Tools. They acknowleded my problem and I am still waiting for a response from them.

What did I learn?
1. I am out ~$45.
2. I  can’t use Spyware Doctor (from PC Tools) unless, maybe, I give up Eudora email client software.
3. PC Tools technical support has ignored me.
4. I will never use PC Tools software again.
5. I am getting further behind with my work.
6. Aaaggghh!

Communicating Again

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Thanks to Northwestel I am connected to the world again. I have a telephone and adsl internet service installed in my future motel room, and I have installed a wireless router to be able to have internet access in my motorhome until the cold forces me to move.

My isolation has prompted me to add to my solitary activities. I am learning to program in Java.

Really Roughing It In A Campground

Monday, September 8, 2008

The date of this entry is Saturday September 6th. It will be posted when I have access to the internet.

My RV site has no water and no sewer access. I do, however, have a 30A electical outlet available for which I am grateful. As morning temperatures have been close to 0 degrees, I have limited on board propane supply. A friend loaned me a large stand alone propane tank but the propane company in Whitehorse didn’t want to deliver propane to Tagish for only one person. This morning I ran out of fresh water and both grey water and black water tanks were full.

Upon exiting the RV site I quickly found out that it was too small for a safe exit . . . I had about four inches to spare next to a tree, after having some branches on the offending tree scrunched against the motorhome.

After driving a short distance to the sewer dump and after beginning my dump . . . I found out that I left my sewer screw type connector at the last campground when I dumped there before leaving. I put a nearby rock on the sewer hose to keep it in place . . . the pressure of the sewage pushed it aside and there was sewage scattered in a two foot radius around the sewer. I was lucky to jump out of the way in time.

Filling the fresh water tank proceeded without any trouble. Thank God!

I surveyed the RV sites to plan a return to a campsite . . . I had already been in the largest one! I decided to attempt to park again, but in the reverse direction. The entry didn’t leave much room to spare but it looks like the next exit will be easier than the last one was. A co-pilot of course would make things much easier for me.

At this point I could sure use a Scotch! I again, connected power, leveled the unit, extended the slides and put things back in place for living.

I decided I could use a steak for supper so I cooked one up. It was so-o-o-o tough, I decided to throw it out along with three others purchased in the same package. Oh how I miss Oliver!

Roughing It In A Campground

Monday, September 8, 2008

The date of this entry is Monday September 1st. It will be posted when I have a adsl line installed by Northwestel or another means of access to the internet. The work order is in progress at Northwestel.

The rain has stopped and I am now back in Tagish . . . still living in my motorhome. The mornings are cold, so I don’t think it will be very long before I will be forced to move into a motel for the Winter. I am the only one in the campground, in a forest, and the evenings are dead quiet. Very peaceful. The only service to the motorhome is a 30 amp electical connection. I have to drive, although not too far, for sewer dumps and to refill the motorhome water tank (about every 4 days). Propane is delivered as required.
