PROFILE

Ulasovetz - Canadian Visual Artist

Roger Serge Ulasovetz, born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, started painting with oils at 13 years of age. Self taught, mainly through continuing exposure to art information in the form of texts, art workshops, networking with peers, and by satisfying a never ending thirst for artistic knowledge, he always devoted as much time as possible to his art, while at the same time following a career in industrial electronics and information technology. Roger first moved to Canada’s far north in 1961. He and his Gwich’in wife Aggie, whom he met in Inuvik, have spent many years working in the north, painting and enjoying its solitude and beauty. Roger’s painting career started taking over full time when in 1986 he successfully painted for two years in Edmonton Alberta. In 1990/91 he frequently painted in Washington State.

Before moving to the Yukon, Roger worked for the Government of the Northwest Territories as Arts and Crafts Programs Manager. In 2004 Roger and his wife moved to Tagish Yukon where he painted full time at his home studio/gallery and on location mainly in the Yukon.

Aggie passed away in December of 2005. Roger’s goal was to stay in the Yukon and to continue to grow as an artist, concentrating on oils, but also using watercolors, acrylics, soft pastels, graphite and charcoal. He was truly a “Painter of Yukon Light”.

He soon decided that not only was he now living a solitary life in Yukon but a lonely life as well, so he packed up and crossed Canada 7 times looking for a new home. While planning on spending a winter in Arizona he felt at home in Oliver BC, where he now resides and paints in his Oliver home/studio. Although still living a solitary life style, he is not lonely, and is happy as a “Canadian Visual Artist”.

  1. Hello from Phoenix, Arizona.

I happened upon your profile while Googling for information about a European artist called “Valerius”, one of whom you credit with introducing you to art.

My mother had such a friend back in the 60′s, early 60′s probably, in Guatemala. This Valerius was, as I recall, primarily a portrait artist who, if memory serves, had done portraits of various royalty and so forth.

I didn’t find any information about this man via Google, though I found there was another artist, a Belgian by the name of Valerius de Saedeleer, who died in 1946. There’s also a Russian artist named Valerius who was born in 1969. “Valerius” is a more popular name than I’d have thought, and that’s about as far as I got.

I suppose Valerius de Saedeleer might be the one you refer to, though I’d guess from your picture that you’re probably way too young to have known that one when you were 13 years old.

I have a painting by the Valerius who was my Mother’s friend. My sister has a portrait that he did of my Mother. If you’d like to see the one I have, I uploaded it to my Flickr page here:

  2. Steve -
Your painting is by the same Valerius that introduced me to paining many years ago. He is a dutch artist that married my sister then moved to Toronto Canada. He was in Guatemala during the time your mother was there. I really like your painting of the Guatemalan girl. The Valerius signature on it is identical to a portrait I have of my sister. Although the style is slightly different, I am confident that your Valerius is by the same artist.

Yes, it is a small world.
